TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK
A tropical wave will continue to cause
occasional cloudiness, showers and isolated thunderstorms over the Eastern
Caribbean region during the night with a brief improvement during the morning. An increase in cloudiness, showers and
thunderstorms is expected thereafter as Tropical Depression 13 will begin affecting
the Leeward Islands and gradually the rest of the Eastern Caribbean Islands as
the day progresses.
..TROPICAL DEPRESSION THIRTEEN EXPECTED TO
BECOME A TROPICAL STORM LATER TODAY..
At 5:00 pm today, the centre of Tropical
Depression Thirteen was located near latitude 16.7 North, longitude 53.9 West
or about 615 miles or 990 kilometres east of the northern Leeward Islands. The
depression is moving toward the west-northwest near 21 mph or 33 km/h and this
motion is expected to continue for the next few days. On the forecast track, the depression is
expected to move near or north of the northern Leeward Islands by late Friday,
near or north of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico on
Saturday, and near or north of Hispaniola Saturday night.
Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph or 55
km/h with higher gusts. Gradual strengthening is forecast, and the depression is
expected to become a tropical storm on Friday.
Tropical Storm Watches have been issued for most
of the Leeward Islands.
Interests elsewhere in the northern Leeward
Islands, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico should closely monitor the
progress of this system, as additional tropical storm watches or warnings will
be required for portions of those areas later today.
Tropical Depression Thirteen does not pose a
direct threat to Saint Lucia and the rest of the Windward Islands, however the
Saint Lucia Meteorological Services will continue to monitor the progress of
the system.
Another tropical wave located over the central
Tropical Atlantic is moving westward at 17 mph or 28 km/h.
A
third tropical wave located over the far eastern Tropical Atlantic is also
moving westward at 17 mph or 28 km/h. This wave has a low to medium chance of
tropical cyclone development during the next five days.
