TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

The Atlantic High-Pressure System will become the dominant weather feature across the region today producing light to moderate winds and fair skies. However, a tropical wave, currently positioned east of the Lesser Antilles is advancing westward at approximately 17 mph (28 km/h). The wave is expected to bring an increase in moisture and instability which will result in a few periods of cloudiness and showers over parts of the Lesser Antilles from late tonight and tomorrow Tuesday.

Another tropical wave located over the eastern Tropical Atlantic is moving westward near 12 mph or 19 km/h. Gradual development of this wave is possible and a tropical depression could form during the latter part of the week.

At 11:00 am today, the eye of Hurricane Erin was located near latitude 23.1 North, longitude 70.8 West. Erin is moving toward the west-northwest and further away from our region near 10 mph or 17 km/h. Maximum sustained winds are near 140 mph or 220 km/h, with higher gusts.

A tropical wave located over the western Tropical Atlantic, is moving westward near 17 mph or 28 km/h. This wave is expected to affect our region from late tonight into tomorrow.
Another tropical wave located over the eastern Tropical Atlantic is moving westward near 20 mph or 31 km/h. Gradual development of this wave is possible and a tropical depression could form during the latter part of the week.

Hurricane Erin will continue to affect the Northern Leeward Islands during the next few hours.

… CATEGORY 3 ERIN CONTINUING TO PASS NORTH OF THE NORTHERN LEEWARD ISLANDS…

At 500 AM today, the center of Hurricane Erin was located near latitude 20.6 North, longitude 66.4 West or about 582 miles (937 Km) north northwest of St. Lucia. Erin is moving toward the west-northwest near 14 mph (22 km/h). This motion with a decrease in forward speed is expected today, followed by a gradual turn to the north on Monday and Tuesday. On the forecast track, the core of Erin is expected to pass to the east of the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas tonight and Monday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 125 mph (205 km/h) with higher gusts. 

The outer bands of Erin will continue to produce areas of heavy rainfall through Sunday across the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.

An area of low pressure could form over the central tropical Atlantic during the middle to latter portion of the week. Some subsequent development could occur as the system moves westward to west-northwestward at 15 to 20 mph.

Erin is moving toward the west near 15 mph or 24 km/h. This motion is expected to continue this evening. A turn toward the west-northwest is expected tonight with a decrease in forward speed, and a turn toward the north is expected to occur early next week. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 160 mph or 260 km/h, with higher gusts. Erin is now a category 5 hurricane. Fluctuations in intensity are expected tonight through Sunday night. A slow weakening is expected to begin on Monday. Interests in the northern Leeward Islands should continue to monitor the progress of Hurricane Erin.

Erin is moving toward the west near 17 mph or 28 km/h. This motion is expected to continue through the weekend. On the forecast track, the center of Erin is likely to move just north of the northern Leeward Islands over the weekend. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 155 mph or 250 km/h, with higher gusts. Erin is now a category 4 hurricane. At 11:00 am today, the center of Hurricane Erin was located near latitude 18.2 North, longitude 56.1 West or about 436 miles (701 km) north-northeast of St. Lucia. Erin is moving toward the west-northwest near 18 mph (30 km/h). This motion is expected to continue into the weekend. On the forecast track, the center of Erin is likely to move near or just north of the northern Leeward Islands over the weekend. Maximum sustained winds are near 75 mph (120 km/h) with higher gusts. Erin is a category one hurricane. Interests in the northern Leeward Islands should monitor the progress of Hurricane Erin.
