TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

Unstable conditions influenced by Hurricane Sam, will continue to cause occasional cloudy periods with some scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms mainly over the central and southern portions of our region, during the forecast period.

At 11:00 am today, the centre of Hurricane Sam was located near latitude 19.4 degrees north, longitude 57.0 degrees west or about 405 miles or 655 kilometres east of the northern Leeward Islands. Sam is moving toward the northwest near 9 mph or 15 km/h and will pass well to the northeast of the northern Leeward Islands tonight. Maximum sustained winds are near 130 mph or 215 km/h, with higher gusts. Although Hurricane Sam does not pose a direct threat to the region, swells generated by this system will impact the northern portion of the Lesser Antilles during the next couple of days.

Interests in the Leeward Islands are advised to continue monitoring the progress of this system.

A tropical wave located over the central Tropical Atlantic is moving westward near 17 mph or 28 km/h.

Another broad area of low pressure together with a tropical wave located over the far eastern Tropical Atlantic, is moving westward near 15 mph or 24 km/h. This system has a high chance or 90 percent of tropical cyclone formation during the next two days.
