Ian is moving toward the west at 16 mph or 26 km/h. Maximum sustained winds are near 45 mph or 75 km/h, with higher gusts. Significant strengthening is forecast during the next few days and Ian is expected to become a hurricane by late Sunday and a major hurricane by late Monday. A hurricane warning is in effect for the Cayman Islands. The tropical storm watch was discontinued for Jamaica.


A broad area of low pressure located over the central Tropical Atlantic is moving slowly northwestward. This system has a low chance of tropical cyclone formation during the next five days.

Tropical Depression ten becomes Tropical Storm Hermine. At 5:00 pm today, the center of Tropical Storm Hermine was located near latitude 18.6 north, longitude 20.5 west. Hermine is moving toward the north-northwest near 10 mph or 17 km/h. Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph or 65 km/h, with higher gusts. Tropical Storm Hermine is expected to remain over the far eastern Atlantic and does not pose a threat to our region.

Fair to partly cloudy with a few showers over the Leeward Islands. Further south, generally cloudy to overcast at times with scattered showers, which will be heavy in some locations, gusty winds and isolated thunderstorms.

TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

A strong tropical wave will continue to produce cloudiness, moderate to heavy showers, gusty winds and thunderstorms over the Windward Islands and areas further south during the next 24 hours. This system has a high chance of tropical cyclone formation and is likely to become a tropical depression within the next two days.  

At 5:00 pm today, the centre of Hurricane Fiona was located near latitude 25.6 North, longitude 71.5 West. Fiona is moving toward the north near 9 mph or 15 km/h away from the Eastern Caribbean and does not pose a threat to our region.   

A tropical wave associated with an area of low pressure located over the central tropical Atlantic is moving slowly westward. This system has a low chance of tropical cyclone formation during the next five days.

A third tropical wave is forecast to move off the west coast of Africa tomorrow. Some development of this wave is expected while it moves slowly westward over the eastern tropical Atlantic during the next five days.
