…A Tropical Depression Was Formed East Of The Northern Leeward Islands Last Night And Now Has Been Upgraded To Tropical Storm Peter This Morning…

At 5:00 am today, the center of Tropical Storm Peter was located near latitude 18.0 north, longitude 53.5 west or about 630 miles or 1015 kilometres east of the northern Leeward Islands. Peter is moving toward the northwest near 15 mph or 24 km/h and this motion is expected to continue this morning. On this track, peter is expected to pass north of the northern Leeward Islands on Monday and Tuesday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph or 65 km/h, with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast during the next day or so, followed by slow weakening by late Monday and Tuesday. Interests in the Leeward Islands should continue to monitor the progress of this system.

…Tropical Depression Seventeen Forms Over The Far Eastern Tropical Atlantic…

At 5:00 am today, the center of newly formed Tropical Depression Seventeen was located near latitude 11.8 north, longitude 28.2 west. The depression is moving toward the west-northwest near 14 mph or 22 km/h and this motion is expected to continue today.

Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph or 55 km/h, with higher gusts. Some strengthening is expected over the next couple days and the depression could become a tropical storm later today or Monday. This system is expected to remain over the Tropical Atlantic over the next few days and pose no threat to our region.
