At 11:00 am today, the center of Hurricane Ernesto was located near latitude 20.5 North, longitude 67.6 West or 175 miles or 280 km northwest of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Ernesto is moving toward the northwest near 16 mph or 26 km/h.  A turn towards the north-northwest and north with a gradual decrease in forward speed is expected tonight and Thursday. Maximum sustained wind speed is near 75 mph or 120 km/h, with higher gusts. The center of Ernesto will continue to move away from Puerto Rico today, move across the western Atlantic during the next few days, and approach Bermuda Friday and Saturday.

A tropical wave located over the central Tropical Atlantic, is moving westward near 20 mph or 31 km/h.

The axis of another tropical wave, located over the far eastern Atlantic tropical wave is, moving west at 8 mph to 13 km/h. No significant convection accompanies this wave.

At 5:00 am today, the center of Tropical Storm Ernesto was located near latitude 19.5 North, longitude 66.6 West or 85 miles or 135 km north-northwest of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Ernesto is moving toward the northwest near 16 mph or 26 km/h.  A turn towards the north-northwest and north with a gradual decrease in forward speed is expected tonight and Thursday. Maximum sustained wind speed is near 70 mph or 110 km/h, with higher gusts. Ernesto is expected to become a hurricane by later this morning and could be a major hurricane in a couple of days. The center of Ernesto should pass north of Puerto Rico through today then move over the Western Atlantic later in the week.

TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

Unstable conditions associated with Tropical Storm Ernesto, will continue to affect the northern Lesser Antilles, during the forecast period.

At 5:00 pm today, the center of Tropical Storm Ernesto was located near latitude 18.01 North, longitude 64.1 West or 65 miles or 105 km east-southeast of St Thomas. Ernesto is moving toward the west-northwest near 18 mph or 30 km/h and this general motion is expected to continue through tonight. Maximum sustained winds speed has increased to near 60 mph or 95 km/h, with higher gusts. Additional strengthening is forecast and Ernesto is expected to become a hurricane by tonight. The center of Ernesto should pass near the Virgin Islands this evening and northeast to north of Puerto Rico, tonight and tomorrow. Ernesto is then forecast to turn northward over the western Atlantic.
