TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

Unstable conditions associated with Tropical Storm Ernesto, will continue to affect the northern Lesser Antilles, during the forecast period.

At 5:00 pm today, the center of Tropical Storm Ernesto was located near latitude 18.01 North, longitude 64.1 West or 65 miles or 105 km east-southeast of St Thomas. Ernesto is moving toward the west-northwest near 18 mph or 30 km/h and this general motion is expected to continue through tonight. Maximum sustained winds speed has increased to near 60 mph or 95 km/h, with higher gusts. Additional strengthening is forecast and Ernesto is expected to become a hurricane by tonight. The center of Ernesto should pass near the Virgin Islands this evening and northeast to north of Puerto Rico, tonight and tomorrow. Ernesto is then forecast to turn northward over the western Atlantic.

A tropical wave located over the eastern Tropical Atlantic, is moving westward near 12 mph or 19 km/h.

At 11:00 am today, the center of Tropical Storm Ernesto was located near latitude 16.9 North, longitude 62.6 West or 155 miles or 250 km east-southeast of St Croix. Ernesto is moving toward the west-northwest near 18 mph or 30 km/h and this general motion is expected to continue through tonight. Maximum sustained winds speed has increased to near 50 mph or 85 km/h, with higher gusts. Additional strengthening is forecast and Ernesto is expected to become a hurricane by early Wednesday. The center of Ernesto should pass near the Virgin Islands this evening and northeast to north of Puerto Rico, tonight or tomorrow. Ernesto is then forecast to turn northward over the western Atlantic.
A hurricane warning has been issued for the U.S and British Virgin Islands. Tropical storm warnings remain in effect for the Leeward Islands, Guadeloupe, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

A tropical wave located over the eastern Tropical Atlantic, is moving westward near 12 mph or 19 km/h.

Ernesto is moving toward the west near 20 mph (31 km/h) with maximum sustained wind speed of 40 mph (65 km/h) with gusts up to 52 mph (83 Km/h), and maximum seas near 13 ft. Ernesto is expected to move across portions of the Leeward Islands this morning and near or over the U.S. and British Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico by this evening.  Ernesto is then forecast to turn northward over the western Atlantic.

Ernesto is moving toward the west-northwest near 28 mph (44 km/h) with maximum sustained wind speed of 40 mph (65 km/h) with gusts up to 52 mph (83 Km/h), and maximum seas near 13 ft. On the forecast track, Ernesto is expected to move across portions of the Leeward Islands late tonight or Tuesday and near or over the U.S. and British Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico by Tuesday evening.  Ernesto is then forecast to turn northward over the western Atlantic.

At 11:00 am today, the disturbance was centered near latitude 15.1 North, longitude 55.6 West or about 370 miles or 590 kilometers east-northeast of Saint Lucia. The system is moving toward the west near 26 mph or 43 km/h and this motion is expected to continue with some decrease in forward speed during the next couple of days. On the forecast track, the disturbance is expected to move across portions of the Leeward Islands late tonight or Tuesday and approach the U.S. and British Virgin Islands Tuesday night. Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph or 55 km/h, with higher gusts.

A strong tropical wave associated with an area of low-pressure located over the central Tropical Atlantic, is becoming better organized and this system is expected to develop into a tropical storm by late Monday. At 5:00 pm today, the disturbance was centered near latitude 13.6 North, longitude 48.0 West. The system is moving toward the west-northwest near 21 mph or 33 km/h and this motion is expected to continue during the next couple of days.  On the forecast track, the disturbance is expected to move across portions of the Leeward Islands on Tuesday and approach the U.S. and British Virgin Islands Tuesday night. Maximum sustained winds are near 30 mph or 45 km/h with higher gusts.

Tropical Storm Watches have been issued for the Islands from Guadeloupe northward to portions of the British Virgin Islands.

A tropical wave associated with an area of low-pressure located over the central Tropical Atlantic, is moving westward near 18 mph or 30 km/h. This system has a high chance of tropical cyclone development during the next 7 days, and is expected to impact mainly the northern portion of the Lesser Antilles from late Monday into Tuesday. Interests in the region are advised to monitor the progress of this system.
