Unstable conditions associated with Tropical Storm Ernesto, will continue to affect the northern Lesser Antilles, during the forecast period.

At 5:00 pm today, the center of Tropical Storm Ernesto was located near latitude 18.01 North, longitude 64.1 West or 65 miles or 105 km east-southeast of St Thomas. Ernesto is moving toward the west-northwest near 18 mph or 30 km/h and this general motion is expected to continue through tonight. Maximum sustained winds speed has increased to near 60 mph or 95 km/h, with higher gusts. Additional strengthening is forecast and Ernesto is expected to become a hurricane by tonight. The center of Ernesto should pass near the Virgin Islands this evening and northeast to north of Puerto Rico, tonight and tomorrow. Ernesto is then forecast to turn northward over the western Atlantic.

A tropical wave located over the eastern Tropical Atlantic, is moving westward near 12 mph or 19 km/h.

Ernesto is moving toward the west-northwest near 18 mph or 30 km/h and this general motion is expected to continue through tonight. Maximum sustained winds speed has increased to near 50 mph or 85 km/h, with higher gusts. Additional strengthening is forecast and Ernesto is expected to become a hurricane by early Wednesday. The center of Ernesto should pass near the Virgin Islands this evening and northeast to north of Puerto Rico, tonight or tomorrow. Ernesto is then forecast to turn northward over the western Atlantic.
A hurricane warning has been issued for the U.S and British Virgin Islands. Tropical storm warnings remain in effect for the Leeward Islands, Guadeloupe, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

The system is moving toward the west-northwest near 21 mph or 33 km/h and this motion is expected to continue during the next couple of days.  On the forecast track, the disturbance is expected to move across portions of the Leeward Islands on Tuesday and approach the U.S. and British Virgin Islands Tuesday night. Maximum sustained winds are near 30 mph or 45 km/h with higher gusts.
