Saint Lucia Observes World Meteorological Day 2026
Theme: “Observing Today, Protecting Tomorrow”
The Saint Lucia Meteorological Services joins the global community in commemorating World Meteorological Day on March 23, 2026, under the theme “Observing Today, Protecting Tomorrow.” This theme underscores the critical role of weather, climate, and water observations in safeguarding lives, livelihoods, and sustainable development.
World Meteorological Day marks the establishment of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in 1950 and recognizes the essential contributions of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services worldwide. Here in Saint Lucia, the Meteorological Services continues to play a key role in monitoring weather patterns, issuing timely forecasts and warnings, and supporting national resilience to natural hazards.
As a Small Island Developing State, Saint Lucia is particularly vulnerable to extreme weather events, including hurricanes, intense rainfall, drought, and the impacts of climate change. Accurate and continuous observation of atmospheric and oceanic conditions remains fundamental to early warning systems, disaster risk reduction, water resource management, and climate adaptation planning.
Throughout the year, the Saint Lucia Meteorological Services utilizes advanced technologies, including satellite data, radar systems, and surface observation networks, to provide reliable and timely information to key sectors such as aviation, agriculture, water management, tourism, and disaster management.
In observance of this year’s theme, the Meteorological Services is encouraging greater public awareness and appreciation of meteorological data and its importance in protecting communities today and securing a safer tomorrow.
The public is encouraged to stay informed by following official weather updates and advisories and to take proactive measures in preparing for weather and climate-related risks.
