A TROPICAL STORM WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR SAINT LUCIA

Tropical storm warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected within the warning area within 36 hours.

At 8:00 am today the center of Tropical Storm Elsa was located near latitude 9.6 degrees north, longitude 50.2 degrees west or about 780 miles or 1255 kilometers east-southeast of Saint Lucia.

Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph or 65 km/h, with higher gusts.  Some strengthening is forecast during the next 24 hours. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles or 165 kilometers from the center.

Tropical Storm Elsa is moving towards the west near 25 mph or 41 km/h. An even faster motion to the west-northwest is expected over the next 24 to 36 hours. On the forecast track, the system will pass near Saint Lucia or over the Windward Islands on Friday and move into the eastern Caribbean Sea late Friday.

Elsa is expected to produce tropical storm force winds up to near 60 mph or 96 km/h and rainfall totals of 3 to 6 inches or 76 to 152 mm with maximum totals of 8 inches or 203 mm across the Windward Islands and Barbados on Friday.

Tropical Storm warnings are also in effect for Martinique, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Barbados.  Tropical storm watches are in effect for Guadeloupe and Grenada and its dependencies.

The Saint Lucia Meteorological Services will continue to closely monitor the progress of this system and the next advisory will be issued at 11:00 am.

A TROPICAL STORM WARNING HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR SAINT LUCIA

A tropical storm warning has been issued for Saint Lucia, with effect from 11:00 pm today.

Tropical storm warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected within the warning area within 36 hours.

At 11:00 pm today the center of Tropical Depression Five was located near latitude 9.6 degrees north, longitude 46.3 degrees west or about 1020 miles or 1645 kilometers east southeast of Saint Lucia.

Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph or 55 km/h.  Strengthening is forecast and the tropical depression is expected to become a tropical storm early Thursday before reaching the Windward Islands.

Tropical Depression Five is moving towards the west near 23 mph or 37 km/h. An even faster motion to the west-northwest is expected over the next 24 to 36 hours. On the forecast track, the system will pass near Saint Lucia on Friday, move into the eastern Caribbean Sea late Friday and Friday night.

Tropical Storm warnings are in effect for Saint Lucia, Martinique and Barbados.  Tropical storm watches are in effect for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Guadeloupe.

The Saint Lucia Meteorological Services will continue to closely monitor the progress of this system and another statement will be issued at 5:00 am.

THE TROPICAL DISTURBANCE IN THE ATLANTIC BECOMING BETTER ORGANIZED…
TROPICAL STORM WATCH IS IN EFFECT FOR ST. LUCIA.

At 5:00 pm today, the disturbance was centred near latitude 9.6 North, longitude 43.7 West or about 1195 miles or 1920 kilometres east of St Lucia. The system is moving toward the west-northwest near 21 mph or 33 km/h and this motion is expected to continue with an increase in forward speed during the next couple of days. On the forecast track, the system will pass near or over St Lucia and portions of the Windward Islands or the southern Leeward Islands on Friday, move into the eastern Caribbean Sea late Friday and Friday night, and move near the southern coast of Hispaniola on Saturday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph or 55 km/h with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours and the disturbance is expected to become a tropical storm tonight or on Thursday.

TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

An active tropical wave, together with a low pressure centre will generate  cloudy to overcast skies, scattered showers and thunderstorms over the Lesser Antilles during the forecast period.  Significant development of this system is unlikely while it moves quickly west near 26 mph or 43 km/h.

  Further east, a second active tropical wave associated with a low pressure area, is located over the central Tropical Atlantic. The system moving westward near 20 mph or 31 km/h and expected to produce heavy showers and thunderstorms over the Windward Islands, from Friday into Saturday. Environmental conditions appear favorable for development and this system may be at least a tropical depression by the time it gets to the islands.

The alert level at the La Soufriere volcano in Saint Vincent remains at Orange.

A second tropical wave located over the central Tropical Atlantic is moving westward near 20 mph or 31 km/h. This system is expected to produce heavy showers and thunderstorms over the Windward Islands, from Thursday night into Friday. Environmental conditions appear favorable for development. There is a medium chance that this system may be at least a tropical depression by the time it gets to the islands.

TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

A gradual increase in cloudiness and shower activity is expected over the Lesser Antilles ahead of an approaching tropical wave from late evening Tuesday and into Wednesday. A broad area of low pressure associated with this tropical is moving west to west-northwestward near 17 mph or 28 km/h. This system is expected to affect the Lesser Antilles from Wednesday and has a low chance of tropical cyclone formation over the next two days.

A plume of Saharan dust haze is expected to cause a reduction in visibility and air quality over our region during the next few days.

A second active tropical wave located over the central Tropical Atlantic is moving westward near 20 mph or 31 km/h.
