Moisture and instability ahead of an approaching tropical wave, located a few hundred miles east of the Lesser Antilles, will cause some cloudy periods with showers and isolated thunderstorms over our region during the forecast period.

A plume of Saharan dust haze is expected to affect our region from late Saturday, following the passage of this wave.

The atmosphere over the region remains sufficiently moist and unstable to generate occasional cloudy periods with scattered showers and possibly isolated thunderstorms mainly over the central and southern portions of the Lesser Antilles, during the forecast period.

At 11:00 am today, the eye of Hurricane Sam was located near latitude 17.5 degrees north, longitude 54.3 degrees west or about 580 miles or 935 km east of the northern Leeward Islands. Sam is moving toward the northwest near 8 mph or 13 km/h. Maximum sustained winds are near 130 mph or 215 km/h, with higher gusts. Sam is a category 4 hurricane. Although Hurricane Sam does not pose a direct threat to our region, swells generated by this system will impact the Lesser Antilles for the next several days.

Interests in the Leeward Islands are advised to continue monitoring the progress of this system.
