Sam is moving toward the northwest near 9 mph or 15 km/h and will pass well to the northeast of the northern Leeward Islands tonight. Maximum sustained winds are near 130 mph or 215 km/h, with higher gusts. Although Hurricane Sam does not pose a direct threat to the region, swells generated by this system will impact the northern portion of the Lesser Antilles during the next couple of days.

Sam is a category 4 hurricane and some fluctuations in intensity are expected during the next day or so. Sam is not expected to directly impact the islands, however swells generated by this system are forecast to reach the Lesser Antilles early this week.

Interests in the Leeward and northern Windward Islands are advised to continue monitoring the progress of this system.

Two tropical waves located over the central and far eastern Tropical Atlantic are moving westward near 12 mph or 19 km/h.
