FORECAST FOR THE LESSER ANTILLES

Partly cloudy to occasionally cloudy skies with some scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the Windward Islands. Over the Leeward Islands, fair to partly cloudy skies with a few showers.

TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

Moisture and instability associated with an upper level trough, coupled with a light wind regime, will continue to generate occasional cloudy periods with showers and isolated thunderstorms over the southern part of our region, during the forecast period.

At 11:00 am today, the centre of Hurricane Sam was located near latitude 13.9 degrees north, longitude 50.2 degrees west or about 905 miles or 1455 km east- southeast of the northern Leeward Islands. Sam is moving toward the west-northwest near 8 mph or 13 km/h. Maximum sustained winds are near 145 mph or 230 km/h, with higher gusts. Sam is a category 4 hurricane and some fluctuations in intensity are expected during the next day or so. Sam is not expected to directly impact the islands, however swells generated by this system are forecast to reach the Lesser Antilles early this week.

Interests in the Leeward and northern Windward Islands are advised to continue monitoring the progress of this system.

Two tropical waves located over the central and far eastern Tropical Atlantic are moving westward near 12 mph or 19 km/h.
