FORECAST FOR THE LESSER ANTILLES

Partly cloudy to occasionally cloudy skies, with some scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the Windward Islands. Over the Leeward Islands, fair to partly cloudy skies with a few showers.

TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

Moisture and instability associated with an upper level trough, coupled with a light wind regime, will continue to generate occasional cloudy periods with showers and isolated thunderstorms over the southern part of our region, during the forecast period.

At 5:00 pm today, the centre of Hurricane Sam was located near latitude 14.2 degrees north, longitude 50.5 degrees west or about 880 miles or 1415 km east-southeast of the northern Leeward Islands. Sam is moving toward the northwest near 7 mph or 11 km/h. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 150 mph or 240 km/h, with higher gusts. Sam is a category 4 hurricane, however some fluctuations in intensity are expected during the next couple of days. Thereafter some slow weakening is forecast. Sam is not expected to directly impact the islands, however swells generated by this system are forecast to reach the Lesser Antilles early this week.

Interests in the Leeward and northern Windward Islands are advised to continue monitoring the progress of this system.

Two tropical waves located over the central and eastern Tropical Atlantic are moving westward near 15 mph or 24 km/h and 17 mph or 28 km/h respectively.
