FORECAST FOR THE LESSER ANTILLES

Partly cloudy to occasionally cloudy skies with some scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the Windward Islands and areas further south. Over the Leeward Islands, fair to partly cloudy skies with a few showers.

TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

Moisture and instability associated with an upper level trough, coupled with a light wind regime, will continue to generate occasional cloudy periods with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the southern part of our region, during the forecast period.

At 5:00 am today, the centre of Hurricane Sam was located near latitude 15.2 degrees north, longitude 51.4 degrees west or about 800 miles or 1290 km east-southeast of the northern Leeward Islands. Sam is moving toward the northwest near 8 mph or 13 km/h. Maximum sustained winds are near 130 mph or 215 km/h, with higher gusts. Sam is a category 4 hurricane, little change in strength is expected during the next day or so. Thereafter some slow weakening is forecast.

Sam is not expected to directly impact the islands, however swells generated by this system are forecast to reach the Lesser Antilles early this week.

Interests in the Leeward and northern Windward Islands are advised to continue monitoring the progress of this system.

Two tropical waves located over the central and eastern Tropical Atlantic are moving westward near 17 mph or 28 km/h.

A broad area of low pressure, located in the central tropical Atlantic has the potential for cyclone development during the next two to five days.
