FORECAST FOR THE LESSER ANTILLES

Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the central and southern portions of the Lesser Antilles. Further north, fair to partly cloudy skies with a few showers.

TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

Moisture and instability, coupled with a light wind regime, will continue to generate some cloudy periods with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the central and southern portions of our region, during the forecast period.

At 5:00 am today, the centre of Hurricane Sam was located near latitude 17.2 degrees north, longitude 53.9 degrees west or about 610 miles or 980 km east of the northern Leeward Islands. Sam is moving toward the northwest near 9 mph or 15 km/h. Maximum sustained winds are near 130 mph or 215 km/h, with higher gusts. Sam is a category 4 hurricane. Although Hurricane Sam does not pose a direct threat to our region, swells generated by this system will impact the Lesser Antilles for the next several days.

Interests in the Leeward Islands are advised to continue monitoring the progress of this system.

A tropical wave located over the central Tropical Atlantic is moving westward near 12 mph and 19 km/h.

Another tropical wave located over the central Tropical Atlantic is moving westward near 8 mph or 13 km/h. This system has a high chance of tropical cyclone formation during the next five days.

A third tropical wave just off the west coast of Africa, is moving westward near 13 mph or 20 km/h. This system has a medium chance of tropical cyclone formation during the next five days.
