TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

Unstable conditions associated with Hurricane Ernesto, will continue to affect the northern portion of the Lesser Antilles, mainly during the first half of the forecast period.  A relatively drier and more stable atmosphere will prevail over the remainder of the region.

…Ernesto becomes a hurricane north of Puerto Rico…

At 11:00 am today, the center of Hurricane Ernesto was located near latitude 20.5 North, longitude 67.6 West or 175 miles or 280 km northwest of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Ernesto is moving toward the northwest near 16 mph or 26 km/h.  A turn towards the north-northwest and north with a gradual decrease in forward speed is expected tonight and Thursday. Maximum sustained wind speed is near 75 mph or 120 km/h, with higher gusts. The center of Ernesto will continue to move away from Puerto Rico today, move across the western Atlantic during the next few days, and approach Bermuda Friday and Saturday.

A tropical wave located over the central Tropical Atlantic, is moving westward near 20 mph or 31 km/h.

The axis of another tropical wave, located over the far eastern Atlantic tropical wave is, moving west at 8 mph to 13 km/h. No significant convection accompanies this wave.
