At 5:00 am today, the center of Hurricane Erin was located near latitude 19.8 North, longitude 61.1 West or about 401 miles (645 km) north of St. Lucia. Erin is moving toward the west-northwest near 20 mph or 31 km/h. This motion is expected to continue through the weekend. On the forecast track, the center of Erin is likely to move just north of the northern Leeward Islands over the weekend. Maximum sustained winds are near 120 mph or 195 km/h with higher gusts. Erin is a category 3 hurricane. Continued rapid strengthening is expected, and Erin is forecast to become a Category 4 hurricane later today. Interests in the northern Leeward Islands should monitor the progress of Hurricane Erin.
