TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

Unstable conditions caused by Hurricane Erin are expected to cause cloudiness, showers and thunderstorms mainly over the Leeward Islands, during the next 24 hours.

CATEGORY 5 ERIN CONTINUING TO PASS NORTH OF THE NORTHERN LEEWARD ISLANDS…

At 5:00 pm today, the center of Hurricane Erin was located near latitude 20.0 North, longitude 64.0 West or about 459 miles (739 km) north of St. Lucia. Erin is moving toward the west near 15 mph or 24 km/h. This motion is expected to continue this evening. A turn toward the west-northwest is expected tonight with a decrease in forward speed, and a turn toward the north is expected to occur early next week. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 160 mph or 260 km/h, with higher gusts. Erin is now a category 5 hurricane. Fluctuations in intensity are expected tonight through Sunday night. A slow weakening is expected to begin on Monday. Interests in the northern Leeward Islands should continue to monitor the progress of Hurricane Erin.

Two tropical waves located over the eastern and far eastern Tropical Atlantic, are moving westward near 17 and 9 mph or 28 and 15 km/h, respectively.
