…DISTURBANCE BECOMES A TROPICAL DEPRESSION…
At 5:00 pm today, the center of Tropical Depression Nine was located near latitude 22.2 North, longitude 76.5 West or about 200 miles or 325 km northwest of the eastern tip of Cuba. The system is moving slowly towards the northwest near 5 mph or 7 km/h. Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph or 55 km/h, with higher gusts. The system is expected to become a tropical storm by tonight and a hurricane by late Monday or Tuesday. This system is not expected to affect the Lesser Antilles.
… HUMBERTO QUICKLY STRENGTHENS TO A CATEGORY 5 HURRICANE…
At 5:00 pm today, the eye of Hurricane Humberto was located near Latitude 22.9 degrees north, longitude 61.1 degrees west or about 350 miles or 360 kilometres north-northeast of the northern Leeward Islands. Humberto is moving toward the west-northwest near 10 mph or 17 km/h. Maximum sustained winds are near 160 mph or 260 km/h, with higher gusts. Humberto is a category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Humberto will likely remain a powerful major hurricane for the next several days.
A westward moving tropical wave is located over the far eastern Tropical Atlantic.
