Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph or 55 km/h, with higher gusts. Gradual strengthening is forecast, and the depression is expected to become a tropical storm on Saturday and a hurricane late this weekend or early next week.
On the forecast track the system is expected to pass well northeast of the Lesser Antilles and does not pose a direct threat to our region. However, interest in the northern Leeward Islands should monitor the progress of this system.
