FORECAST FOR THE LESSER ANTILLES

Cloudy to overcast with moderate to heavy showers, gusty winds and thunderstorms over the Leeward Islands and areas further to the west-northwest. Elsewhere, partly cloudy to cloudy with scattered light to moderate showers and isolated thunderstorms.

TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

Tropical Storm Laura will continue to affect the northern portion of the region during the forecast period. Moisture and instability generated by Tropical Storm Laura will continue to cause cloudiness, showers and isolated thunderstorms over the Windward Islands and areas further south during the next 24 hours. 

…TROPICAL STORM LAURA…

At 5:00 pm today, the centre of Tropical Storm Laura was located near latitude 17.1 North, longitude 61.2 West or about 40 miles or 65 kilometres east of Antigua. Laura is moving toward the west near 17 mph or 28 km/h and a generally west-northwestward motion at a faster forward speed is expected over the next couple of days.  On the forecast track, the centre of Laura will move near or over portions of the Leeward Islands later today, near or over Puerto Rico Saturday morning, and near the northern coast of Hispaniola late Saturday and early Sunday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 45 mph or 75 km/h with higher gusts. Some slow strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours.

Tropical Storm Warnings have been issued for all of the Leeward Islands, the US and British Virgin Islands and the northern coast of Hispaniola.

Tropical Storm Watches have been issued for the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas.

Laura does not pose a direct threat to Saint Lucia and the rest of the Windward Islands, however moisture and instability generated by this system will continue to affect these areas during the next 36 hours.

A tropical wave located over the far eastern Tropical Atlantic is moving westward at 12 mph or 19 km/h. This wave has a low chance of further development during the next five days.
