Sam is moving toward the west-northwest near 8 mph or 13 km/h. Maximum sustained winds are near 145 mph or 230 km/h, with higher gusts. Sam is a category 4 hurricane and some fluctuations in intensity are expected during the next day or so. Sam is not expected to directly impact the islands, however swells generated by this system are forecast to reach the Lesser Antilles early this week.

At 5:00 am today, the centre of Hurricane Sam was located near latitude 13.8 degrees north, longitude 49.7 degrees west or about 940 miles or 1510 km east southeast of the Northern Leeward Islands. Sam is moving toward the west-northwest near 8 mph or 13 km/h. Maximum sustained winds are near 145 mph or 230 km/h, with higher gusts. Sam is now a category 4 hurricane and some fluctuations in intensity are expected during the next day or so. Sam is not expected to directly impact the islands, however swells generated by this system are forecast to reach the Lesser Antilles early this week.

Sam is moving toward the west-northwest near 10 mph or 17 km/h. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 140 mph or 220 km/h, with higher gusts. Sam is now a category 4 hurricane and additional strengthening is expected through tonight. Sam is not expected to directly impact the islands, however swells generated by this system are forecast to reach the Lesser Antilles early next week.

Sam is moving toward the west near 16 mph or 26 km/h and a general west to west-northwest motion is expected to continue over the next several days, with a gradual slowdown in forward motion.
