…… RENE RESTRENGTHENS INTO A TROPICAL STORM……

At 11:00 am today, the center of Tropical Storm Rene was located over the eastern tropical Atlantic near latitude 17.6 degrees north and longitude 31.5 degrees west. Rene is moving toward the west-northwest near 13 mph or 20 km/h. Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph or 65 km/h with higher gusts.

Both of these systems are forecast to remain over the open Atlantic Ocean and are not expected to pose a direct threat to the Lesser Antilles.

A tropical wave is forecast to emerge off the west coast of Africa tomorrow. This wave has a high chance of tropical cyclone development during the next five days.

The Saint Lucia Meteorological Services will continue to closely monitor and provide updates on the progress of these systems.

The depression is moving towards the west-northwest near 6 mph or 9 km/h. This motion is expected to continue for the next few days with a gradual increase in forward speed. Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph or 55 km/h with higher gusts. Some slow strengthening is forecast over the next few days and the depression is expected to become a tropical storm later today.

A third tropical wave is located just off the coast of West African. Gradual development of this system is expected and a tropical depression is likely to form by the middle of next week, as it moves generally westward over the far Eastern Tropical Atlantic.
