The system is expected to become a tropical storm later today and a hurricane by late Monday or Tuesday. This system is not expected to affect the Lesser Antilles.

At 5:00 pm today, the eye of Hurricane Humberto was located near Latitude 23.9 degrees north, longitude 63.3 degrees west or about 585 miles or 945 kilometres south of Bermuda. Humberto is moving toward the west-northwest near 13 mph or 20 km/h. Maximum sustained winds are near 155 mph or 560 km/h, with higher gusts.  Humberto is an extremely category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.  Humbert will likely remain a powerful major hurricane for the next several days.

At 5:00 pm today, the eye of Hurricane Humberto was located near Latitude 22.9 degrees north, longitude 61.1 degrees west or about 350 miles or 360 kilometres north-northeast of the northern Leeward Islands. Humberto is moving toward the west-northwest near 10 mph or 17 km/h. Maximum sustained winds are near 160 mph or 260 km/h, with higher gusts.  Humberto is a category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.  Humberto will likely remain a powerful major hurricane for the next several days.

An area of low pressure in the vicinity of the Greater Antilles has been upgraded to Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine. At 5:00 PM today, the disturbance was centered near latitude 20.9 North, longitude 74.6 West. The system is moving toward the

northwest near 9 mph or 15 km/h.  On the forecast track, the center of the system is expected to move across the central and northwestern Bahamas this weekend and approach the southeast U.S. coast early next week. Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph or 55 km/h with higher gusts. Gradual strengthening is forecast, and the system is expected to become a tropical depression on Saturday and a tropical storm Saturday night or early Sunday.

…HUMBERTO RAPIDLY STRENGTHENS TO A MAJOR HURRICANE…

At 5:00 pm today, the eye of Hurricane Humberto was located near Latitude 22.3 degrees north…longitude 58.1 degrees west or about 631 miles or 1015 kilometres north-northeast of Saint Lucia. Humberto is moving toward the west-northwest near 5 mph or 7 km/h. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 115 mph or 185 km/h with higher gusts. Humberto is a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Additional strengthening is forecast over the next couple of days. On the forecast track, Humberto is not expected to affect the Lesser Antilles.

…HUMBERTO BECOMES A HURRICANE…At 11:00 am today, the eye of Hurricane Humberto was located near Latitude 22.3 degrees north…longitude 57.7 degrees west or about 638 miles or 1026 kilometres north-northeast of Saint Lucia. Humberto is moving toward the northwest near 5 mph or 7 km/h. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 90 mph or 150 km/h with higher gusts. Significant strengthening is forecast, and Humberto is expected to become a major hurricane this weekend. On the forecast track, Humberto is not expected to affect the Lesser Antilles.

TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

Unstable conditions together with light winds and high daytime temperatures, will cause occasional cloudiness with a few showers and possibly isolated thunderstorms over the Lesser Antilles, during the forecast period.

An area of low pressure is expected to develop from a tropical wave located in the vicinity of the Greater Antilles today. This system is likely to become a tropical depression as it moves near or over the Bahamas within the next couple of days.

…HUMBERTO BECOMES A HURRICANE…At 5:00 am today, the eye of Hurricane Humberto was located near Latitude 22.2 degrees north…longitude 57.3 degrees west or about 639 miles or 1028 kilometres north-northeast of Saint Lucia. Humberto is moving toward the northwest near 3 mph or 6 km/h. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 75 mph or 120 km/h with higher gusts. Significant strengthening is forecast, and Humberto is expected to become a major hurricane this weekend. On the forecast track, Humberto is not expected to affect the Lesser Antilles.

Two tropical waves located over the western and far eastern Tropical Atlantic, are moving westward near 10 mph or 17 km/h.
