Moist and unstable conditions associated with a weak low level trough will cause a few cloudy periods with showers and possibly isolated thunderstorms over parts of the Lesser Antilles, during the next 24 hours.

At 11:00 pm last night, Tropical Depression Nine was upgraded to Tropical Storm Ian. At 5:00 am today, the centre of Tropical Storm Ian was located near latitude 14.7 north, longitude 73.5 west, or about 315 miles or 510 kilometres southeast of Jamaica. Ian is moving toward the west at 14 mph or 22 km/h. Maximum sustained winds are near 45 mph or 75 km/h, with higher gusts. Additional strengthening is forecast during the next few days, and Ian is expected to become a hurricane late Sunday. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Jamaica and a Hurricane Watch is in effect for the Cayman Islands.

An area of low pressure, located over the central Tropical Atlantic is moving slowly northwestward. This system has a low chance of tropical cyclone formation during the next five days.

The depression is moving toward the west-northwest near 15 mph or 24 km/h. Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph or 55 km/h, with higher gusts. Some slow strengthening is forecast during the next day or so, and the depression is expected to become a tropical storm tonight. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Jamaica.

A tropical wave associated with an area of low pressure, located over the central Tropical Atlantic is moving slowly northwestward. This system has a low chance of tropical cyclone formation during the next five days.

Tropical Depression ten becomes Tropical Storm Hermine. At 5:00 pm today, the center of Tropical Storm Hermine was located near latitude 18.6 north, longitude 20.5 west. Hermine is moving toward the north-northwest near 10 mph or 17 km/h. Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph or 65 km/h, with higher gusts. Tropical Storm Hermine is expected to remain over the far eastern Atlantic and does not pose a threat to our region.

FORECAST FOR THE LESSER ANTILLES
Fair to partly cloudy skies with a few showers over the Leeward Islands. Further south, partly cloudy to cloudy skies with scattered showers, which will be heavy in some locations and isolated thunderstorms.

TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK
A strong tropical wave located just to the east of the Windward Islands has a high chance of tropical cyclone formation. This system is likely to become a tropical depression within the next two or three days. This wave is expected to cause cloudiness, moderate to heavy showers, gusty winds and thunderstorms over the southern portion of our region from later today into tomorrow.

Fiona becomes a category 4 hurricane while moving away from the Turks and Caicos Islands. At 2:00 am today, the centre of Hurricane Fiona was located near latitude 23.4 North, longitude 71.8 West or 105 miles or 170 kilometres north of North Caicos Island.

At 3:00 am today, Tropical Storm Gaston was located near latitude 36.2 North longitude 43.6 West or about 920 miles or 1485 kilometres west of the Azores.
Tropical Storm Gaston does not pose a direct threat to Saint Lucia and the Lesser Antilles.
