TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

Moisture and instability associated with a trough system coupled with a light wind regime will generate cloudiness, showers and isolated thunderstorms across portions of the Eastern Caribbean region during the forecast period.

At 5:00 am today, the centre of Hurricane Sam was located near latitude 11.5 degrees north, longitude 42.2 degrees west or about 1470 miles or 2365 km east-southeast of the northern Leeward Islands. Sam is moving toward the west near 15 mph or 24 km/h and this motion is expected to continue through tonight. A decrease in forward speed and a motion toward the west-northwest are expected over the weekend. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 75 mph or 120 km/h with higher gusts. Rapid intensification is forecast to continue, and Sam is likely to become a major hurricane tonight or early Saturday. Interests in the Leeward and northern Windward Islands are advised to continue to monitor the progress of this system.
