TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

Moist and unstable conditions associated with a weak trough system, will cause some cloudy periods with showers and possibly isolated thunderstorms over parts of the Lesser Antilles, during the next 24 hours.

At 5:00 am today, the centre of Tropical Storm Ian was located near latitude 14.9 north, longitude 78.8 west, or about 345 miles or 550 kilometres south-southeast of Grand Cayman. Ian is moving toward the west-northwest at 12 mph or 19 km/h. Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph or 85 km/h, with higher gusts. Rapid strengthening is forecast to begin today and Ian is expected to become a hurricane today or tonight, and a major hurricane by late Monday. A hurricane warning is in effect for Grand Cayman and a hurricane watch is in effect for western Cuba.

A broad area of low pressure located over the central Tropical Atlantic is moving slowly northwestward. This system has a low chance of tropical cyclone formation during the next five days.
