FORECAST FOR THE LESSER ANTILLES

Partly cloudy, becoming cloudy at times with scattered showers, which may be heavy in some locations, and isolated thunderstorms mainly over the Windward Islands and areas further south.

TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

Moist and unstable conditions associated with the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) will continue to affect the southern half of the Lesser Antilles during the forecast period.

A broad area of low pressure located over the central Tropical Atlantic is moving slowly north-northwestward. This system has a high chance of tropical cyclone formation during the next five days.

At 5:00 pm today, the centre of Hurricane Ian was located near latitude 20.3 north, longitude 83.2 west, or about 155 miles or 250 kilometres southeast of the western tip of Cuba. Ian is moving toward the west-northwest at 13 mph or 20 km/h. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 100 mph or 155 km/h, with higher gusts. Rapid strengthening is forecast during the next day or so and Ian is expected to become a major hurricane tonight or early Tuesday. Hurricane and tropical storm warnings and watches are in effect for western Cuba, the Florida Keys and the west coast of Florida.
