TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

HURRICANE CONDITIONS AND HEAVY RAINFALL EXPECTED OVER THE LEEWARD ISLANDS LATER TODAY AND TONIGHT…

Hurricane Tammy will continue to cause cloudiness, periods of rain, scattered moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms over the Lesser Antilles, during the forecast period.

At 5:00 am today, the center of Hurricane Tammy was located near latitude 15.2 degrees north, longitude 60.4 degrees west or about 60 miles or 100 kilometers east-southeast of Dominica. Tammy is moving toward the northwest near 9 mph or 15 km/h, and this general motion is expected to continue through tonight. On the forecast track, the center of Tammy will move near or over portions of the Leeward Islands through early Sunday, and then move north of the northern Leeward Islands by Sunday afternoon.

Maximum sustained winds are near 80 mph or 130 km/h, with higher gusts. Tammy is forecast to remain a hurricane while it moves near or over the Leeward Islands.  

Tammy is expected to produce rainfall totals of 4 to 8 inches with maximum amounts of 12 inches over the Leeward Islands, and 2 to 4 inches with maximum amounts of 6 inches over portions of the Windward Islands.

Swells generated by Tammy will continue to affect portions of the Lesser Antilles during the next few days.

A Hurricane Warning is in effect for most of the Leeward Islands. A hurricane watch and a tropical storm warning are in effect for Dominica and Saba and St. Eustatius. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Martinique and the British Virgin Islands.
