TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

HURRICANE CONDITIONS AND HEAVY RAINFALL EXPECTED OVER THE LEEWARD ISLANDS TONIGHT…

Hurricane Tammy will continue to cause cloudiness, periods of rain, scattered moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms over the Lesser Antilles, during the forecast period.

At 5:00 pm today, the center of Hurricane Tammy was located near latitude 17.0 degrees north, longitude 61.3 degrees west or about 50 miles or 80 kilometers north of Guadeloupe. Tammy is moving toward the north-northwest near 10 mph or

17 km/h, and this general motion is expected to continue through Sunday, followed by a turn toward the north on Monday. On the forecast track, the center of Tammy will move near or over portions of the Leeward Islands through early Sunday, and then move north of the northern Leeward Islands by Sunday afternoon.

Maximum sustained winds remain near 85 mph or 140 km/h, with higher gusts. During the next few days, slow strengthening is possible.  

Tammy is expected to produce rainfall totals of 4 to 8 inches with maximum amounts of 12 inches over the Leeward Islands, and 2 to 4 inches with maximum amounts of 6 inches over portions of the Windward Islands.

Swells generated by Tammy will continue to affect portions of the Lesser Antilles during the next few days.

A Hurricane Warning is in effect for most of the Leeward Islands. A Hurricane watch and a tropical storm warning are in effect for Saba and St. Eustatius. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for the British Virgin Islands.
