TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK
Moist and unstable conditions will continue across the the Lesser Antilles, during the forecast period.
At 11:00 am today, the centre of Tropical Storm Ian was located near latitude 15.2 north, longitude 79.8 west, or about 300 miles or 480 kilometres south-southeast of Grand Cayman. Ian is moving toward the west-northwest at 14 mph or 22 km/h. Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph or 85 km/h, with higher gusts. Rapid strengthening is forecast to begin today, and Ian is expected to become a hurricane today or tonight, and a major hurricane by early Monday. Hurricane warnings are in effect for Grand Cayman and for western Cuba.
A broad area of low pressure located over the central Tropical Atlantic is moving slowly northwestward. This system has a low chance of tropical cyclone formation during the next five days.
