TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

Moist and unstable conditions lingering over the Eastern Caribbean region, will continue to cause cloudiness, showers and isolated thunderstorms mainly over the southern half of the Lesser Antilles during the forecast period.

A broad area of low pressure located over the central Tropical Atlantic is moving slowly north-northwestward. This system has a medium chance of tropical cyclone formation during the next five days.

Ian becomes a hurricane. At 5:00 am today, the centre of Hurricane Ian was located near latitude 18.2 north, longitude 82.0 west, or about 90 miles or 150 kilometres southwest of the Cayman Islands. Ian is moving toward the northwest at 14 mph or 22 km/h. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 75 mph or 120 km/h, with higher gusts. Rapid strengthening is forecast today and Tuesday and Ian is expected to become a major hurricane tonight. Hurricane and tropical storm warnings and watches are in effect for the Cayman Islands, western Cuba, the Florida Keys and the west coast of Florida.
