FORECAST FOR THE LESSER ANTILLES

Generally cloudy skies with scattered showers and thunderstorms over the Leeward islands. Elsewhere, fair to partly cloudy skies with a few showers and possibly isolated thunderstorms.

TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

Weak instability together with a light wind regime over the region, will cause a few cloudy periods with showers and possibly localized thunderstorms over some of the islands during the forecast period.

At 11:00 am today, the center of Tropical Storm Peter was located near latitude 17.6 north, longitude 56.5 west or about 435 miles or 700 kilometres east of the northern Leeward Islands. Peter is moving toward the west-northwest near 17 mph or 28 km/h and this motion along with a gradual decrease in forward speed is expected through Tuesday. On the forecast track, the center of peter is expected to pass well north of the northern Leeward Islands on Monday and Tuesday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 45 mph or 75 km/h, with higher gusts. Little change in strength is forecast through today. Some slight weakening is expected tonight, into Monday. Interests in the Leeward Islands should continue to monitor the progress of this system.

...DEPRESSION LIKELY TO BECOME TROPICAL STORM TONIGHT OR MONDAY…

At 11:00 am today, the center of Tropical Depression Seventeen was located near latitude 13.2 north, longitude 28.8 west. The depression is moving toward the north-northwest near 14 mph or 22 km/h and this motion is expected to continue today.

Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph or 55 km/h, with higher gusts. Some strengthening is expected over the next couple days and the depression could become a tropical storm tonight or Monday. This system is expected to remain over the Tropical Atlantic over the next few days and pose no threat to our region.
