FORECAST FOR THE LESSER ANTILLES

Partly cloudy to occasionally cloudy skies, with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms.

TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

Moist and unstable conditions in the lower atmosphere over the region will generate some cloudy periods with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the Lesser Antilles during the next 24 hours.

At 5:00 am today, the centre of Hurricane Sam was located near latitude 21.5 degrees north, longitude 59.1 degrees west or about 345 miles or 555 kilometres northeast of the northern Leeward Islands. Sam is moving toward the northwest near 12 mph or 19 km/h and will pass well to the northeast of the northern Leeward Islands this morning. Maximum sustained winds are near 145 mph or 230 km/h, with higher gusts. Although Hurricane Sam does not pose a direct threat to the region, swells generated by this system will impact the northern portion of the Lesser Antilles during the next couple of days.

A tropical wave located over the central Tropical Atlantic is moving westward near 12 mph or 19 km/h. This wave is expected to be near the Lesser Antilles by late Friday.

An area of low pressure located over central tropical Atlantic is no longer expected to develop due to unfavourable environmental conditions.

At 5:00 am today, Tropical Storm Victor was located over the far eastern Tropical Atlantic.  Victor is moving towards the west-northwest with a turn towards northwest expected over the weekend. Victor is expected to remain over the open Atlantic and poses no threat to the Lesser Antilles.
