TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

Light easterly to east-northeasterly winds will continue across the Lesser Antilles during the next 24 hours.  Moisture and instability associated with Hurricane Lee could cause cloudy periods, scattered showers and possibly isolated thunderstorms over the northern portion of the region during the forecast period.

At 5:00 am today, the centre of Hurricane Lee was located near latitude 16.1 North, longitude 48.6 West or about 839 miles or 1351 kilometres northeast of Saint Lucia. Lee is moving toward the west-northwest near 13 mph or 20 km/h, and this motion is expected to continue through Friday with a reduction in forward speed over the weekend. Maximum sustained winds remain near 80 mph or 130 km/h, with higher gusts. Rapid strengthening is forecast and Lee is expected to become a major hurricane by early Friday.  Interests in the northern Leeward Islands should continue to monitor the progress of this system.

A strong tropical wave associated with a broad area of low pressure is located over the far eastern Tropical Atlantic and is moving westward near 15 mph or 24 km/h. This system has a high chance of tropical cyclone formation during the next seven days.
