Winds will be blowing from between the northeast and east-northeast near 12 mph or 19 km/h today, with gusts near showers.  A turn towards the southwest is expected during the night.

Weather: Generally cloudy skies with a few periods of rain, some scattered moderate to heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms.

TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

…Tammy becomes a hurricane

Hurricane Tammy will continue to cause cloudiness, periods of rain, scattered moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms over the Lesser Antilles, during the forecast period.

At 11:00 am today, the center of Hurricane Tammy was located near latitude 14.1 degrees North, longitude 58.6 degrees West or about 165 miles or 265 kilometers east-southeast of Martinique. Tammy is moving toward the west-northwest near 7 mph or 11 km/h, and this general motion is expected to continue through this afternoon. A turn toward the northwest is anticipated by this evening, followed by a north-northwestward and northward turn Saturday night through Sunday night.

On the forecast track, the center of Tammy will move near or over portions of the Leeward Islands tonight and on Saturday, and then move north of the northern Leeward Islands on Sunday. Maximum sustained winds are near 75 mph or 120 km/h, with higher gusts. Gradual strengthening is expected over the next couple of days and Tammy is forecast to remain a hurricane while it moves near or over portions of the Leeward Islands.  

Tammy is expected to produce rainfall totals of 4 to 8 inches with maximum amounts of 12 inches over the Leeward Islands and 2 to 4 inches with maximum amounts of 6 inches over the northern Windward Islands.

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for most of the Leeward Islands. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Barbados and Martinique. A Hurricane Warning is in effect for Guadeloupe, Antigua and Barbuda, Montserrat, and St. Kitts and Nevis.  A Hurricane watch is in effect for Anguilla, St. Maarten, St. Martin and St. Barthelemy.
