TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK
Moist and unstable conditions trailing Hurricane Fiona, will continue to cause occasional cloudiness, scattered showers and possibly isolated thunderstorms over the Lesser Antilles during the next 24 hours. Hurricane and tropical storm warnings and watches are in effect for the U.S and British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas.
At 5:00 pm today, the center of Hurricane Fiona was located near latitude 18.5 North, longitude 68.6 West or 15 miles or 25 kilometres west-southwest of Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Fiona is moving toward the northwest near 8 mph or 13 km/h. On the forecast track, the center of Fiona will move over the eastern portion of the Dominican Republic this morning and emerge over the southwestern Atlantic this afternoon. The center is forecast to pass near or to the east of the Turks and Caicos Islands on Tuesday. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 90 mph or 150 km/h, with higher gusts. Additional strengthening is forecast during the next few days after the hurrricane emerges over the southwestern Atlantic and Fiona is forecast to become a major hurricane by Wednesday.
