At 11:00 am today, the centre of Hurricane Sam was located near latitude 22.6 degrees north, longitude 60.0 degrees west or about 365 miles or 585 kilometres north-northeast of the northern Leeward Islands. Sam is moving toward the northwest near 13 mph or 20 km/h. Maximum sustained winds are near 145 mph or 230 km/h, with higher gusts. Although Hurricane Sam does not pose a direct threat to the region, swells generated by this system will continue to impact the northern Leeward Islands today.

A tropical wave located over the central Tropical Atlantic is moving westward near 12 mph or 19 km/h. This wave is expected to affect the Lesser Antilles late Friday into Saturday.

An area of low pressure located over central tropical Atlantic is drifting slowly westward. This system is no longer expected to develop due to unfavourable environmental conditions.

Moisture and instability associated with an upper level trough, coupled with a light wind regime, will continue to generate some cloudy periods with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the central and southern portions of our region, during the forecast period.

At 5:00 pm today, the centre of Hurricane Sam was located near latitude 16.3 degrees north, longitude 52.7 degrees west or about 700 miles or 1125 km east of the northern Leeward Islands. Sam is moving toward the northwest near 9 mph or 15 km/h. Maximum sustained winds are near 120 mph or 195 km/h, with higher gusts. Sam is a category 3 hurricane. Although Hurricane Sam does not pose a direct threat to our region, swells generated by this system will impact the Lesser Antilles for the next several days.

Interests in the Leeward Islands are advised to continue monitoring the progress of this system.

A broad area of low pressure, located over the central Tropical Atlantic is moving westward near 8 mph or 13 km/h. This system has a high chance of tropical cyclone formation during the next five days.

Two tropical waves located over the central and eastern Tropical Atlantic are moving westward near 12 and 17 mph or 19 and 28 km/h, respectively.

A third tropical wave just off the west coast of Africa is moving westward near 13 mph or 20 km/h. This system has a high chance of tropical cyclone formation during the next five days.

Sam is moving toward the northwest near 8 mph or 13 km/h. Maximum sustained winds are near 125 mph or 205 km/h, with higher gusts. Sam is a category 3 hurricane. Although Hurricane Sam does not pose a direct threat to our region, swells generated by this system are expected to reach the Lesser Antilles today.
